PostHeaderIcon ITALIAN MEDIA - COMMON FRONT AGAINST CENSORSHIP

Yesterday, March 24, 2010, FNSI (National Italian Press Federation), organized a meeting between the editors of the leading Italian media to discuss about
the decree on interceptions.
After the meeting, held simultaneously in Rome and Milan, a document signed by every Director has been released (and published today in almost all italian newspapers):

"Italian newspaper editors and editorial staff, together with the Italian Federation of the Italian Press, point out the curtailment of press freedom incidental to the bill about interceptions.

The bill damages and makes void the right to inform, preventing newspapers and tv news (new media included) from informing people about criminal investigations - included those regarding organized crimes - until the preliminary hearing takes place, that is a 6-month/ 3-year, and, in some cases, even 10 -year, period.
The bill violates the citizen fundamental right to know and be informed.
This is a right of vital importance, that cannot be renounced, from which depends the proper functioning of  democracy and that coincides with the newspapers' obligation to inform.
The bill, at the moment examined by Senate, puts in danger the fundamental principles whereby freedom of speech is guaranteed and justice is administered by people.
Journalists perform tasks and have duties that can't be compromised by censorship. We will take the task upon ourselves anyway, regardless of fines, arrests and sanctions. But now let's cancel this bill, because we can't talk down Italian democracy and press of freedom".
